Down the drain trickles
The water from my mouth as
I spit out soap mixed with
Vermouth. Any cleansing agent
I could use to detox the truth
From my tastebuds.

The sense of hesitation flows
Through porcelain pipes below
Blue Crane plumbing staring
Back at me. I am imagining
The underground tunnel of
Sewer connections waiting
To welcome such thoughts of
Contempt I never dared to utter.

Until I look down the drain.
I can no longer refrain from that
Voice so incessant in my brain who
Is a critic in all of the best and worst ways.
Who knows what is left of relational fields,
When forces too grand to reckon with
Suddenly beckon them to brace,
And the perturbed look on my family’s face
When the silence is broken.

The countryside had hills of verdant fields as far as the eye could see.
It was in those fields that I came across a herd of little white goats.
The animals seemed to be bathed in the most calming sense of peace,
Grazing contently under the mild sun. Several kids were there
Amongst the tribe, full of that verdant disposition that only comes
With barely being alive. Then there was the peculiar goat herder
Who, I presume, was responsible for the beautiful and well-behaved flock.
He looked at me with a subtle understanding that I did not belong there,
But was in search of something greater than myself. He explained that
That was what led him to the fields in the first place, and kept him there ever after.
The effects were made evident by the verdant green color of his large straw hat.
It was as if he himself had sprouted right out of the ground.

I never learned how to swim
Though not without trying.
I attended the lessons
Received the instructions
But could never trust enough
To float. Whether that lack
Of faith was in my body or
The fluidity of the water
I'll never really know.
The idea of floating is so
Illogical to me, that I could
Never fully rest or loosen.
Just frozen rigid in self-will.
Never learning to be still meant
Never fully knowing how it feels
To let go of everything and
Abandon all sensible reason
Just to see where the flow takes me.
I may learn one day, I am not opposed
But I haven't had the interest yet
And not sure that I ever will
And maybe rightfully so.

Once again we are here, quickly approaching
The familiar left turn into the Park on 153rd.
It is dark, but streetlights illuminate the pavement.
It is quiet, minus the bouncing of a basketball
In the distance, missing the net, hitting the backboard.
You aren't the source of that sound tonight
Because you are with me, and we are walking away
From the court, to the open field, to look at the stars.
The turf is more comfortable than it looks.
We bring only one blanket to share, in spite of
The dropping temperatures that are difficult to bear
As night creeps closer to one and two AM.
But for some reason, this is our time.
You rub my arms for warmth, insisting I bundle up
And tell me your middle name, and share a
Childhood memory that no one else knows.
The stars are the only things to ever witness
This exchange. I think they believe in us.
Your head in my lap, we both look up.
"I think I see Orion's belt."

It's a fine day for a walk.
I oughta go to the bank today
To get some rolls of quarters
Maybe thirty dollars worth
I have laundry to do soon.
It's windier than expected
A man walking a dog crosses
Me in the crosswalk. He says
"Hi" and tells me I'm pretty.

It's a fine day to go where I've never been.
I acquire my quarters. An eccentric man
Attempts some sort of small talk in line.
I can't quite decipher his mumbling words.
They spilled altogether and fell all over me.
I stroll along the sidewalk on Ben White Blvd.
Quite a convenient place for a sidewalk, I thought
Given that they aren't always a guarantee.

I arrive at the place where I've never been.
An antique store, Uncommon Objects.
My eyes can hardly swallow all that beholds me
In the sizable store. I eventually leave.
I go to the record store next door, and
Buy a personal CD player for thirty dollars.
At home, I listen to a mystery CD from 2008
And surrender to the sounds I have never heard.

I sometimes wish I was born wholly passionate
About a single dream or activity.
Maybe then I could be capable of handling
The incremental progress that comes with
Fulfilling it, and fulfilling it exceptionally.
I wish my skin wouldn’t flare for no reason.
Presumably it is my fault in some way.
Yes, in some way I am perpetuating its irritation.

I am not sure that many or most people
Realize this simple cycle, or any of the other
Handfuls of cycles that make up every
Minute of every day of every piece of forever.
Some people learn faster than others;
Rather, they have a working memory that
Recalls what has worked and what has not.
Other people need significant support
To make up for less than exceptional
Memory faculties, maybe even go an entire
Life without having a true sense of
What it means to remember.
It doesn’t need to be this way.
Live it up, live it large, larger than Life itself.
The matches are dropped, untouched and unlit
each time the mask is disrupted.
One day there may be no more matches.

It has taken much time for the energy reserves
to overflow from my eyes to the page
between the lines. waiting until boxes are fed up
with the imposed duty of containment.
Such is life, always trying not to
Make the same mistake twice.
So much energy and thought spent
On whether or not, this decision or
That, is more efficient, different enough
From the last, to ensure the future
May not repeat the past.

What happens every fortnight
when the world shifts in its increments
and I remain much of the same?

What should I tackle today?
Wash my hair? Shave my arms? Shave my legs?
Hair mask? Exfoliate? Some combination that
I can complete within the miniscule window
Of time before the water starts running cold.
The water has been getting colder and colder
Faster and faster, I'd say since November.
It's probably just because it's winter, and
There is no hot sun beaming down on where-
ever my water heater is located, shared amongst
An unknown number of my neighborly peers.
When I wash my hair, the accumulated strands
That shed gather around the drain and prevent
The water from flowing. If I wash my hair,
I can't do much else but wash my body, or else
The water will run cold and also start to puddle
Around my ankles; circumstances I cannot stand;
That I will not tolerate. So these days, I am usually
Only doing one extra action at a time, per shower.
Feels too little, but I don't like long showers anyways.

as if to say even louder to the world,
"Here is the most beautiful match in the world,
its one-and-a-half-inch soft pine stem capped

lighting, perhaps, the cigarette of the woman you love,

In the wine section of a gas station.
Making wine translates into grand identities
Communicating sacred questions and ideas
By way of otherwise identical bottles of
Something that can, ultimately, kill you,

In a local gas station I happen upon
The Pessimist in communion with
The Seeker in communion with
Someone insisting on starting a rebellion.
How could I not acknowledge the bottles
Performing for me! And bestowing their wisdom.

I don't drink all that often, but the wine in
Gas stations make me want to be a sommelier.
I want to taste it all. I wonder where the reverence
Of the sacred stems from in the wine market.
Perhaps the undeniably biblical roots, where
Wine is profound, once brought to life from water.
Or the movement of the tides, influenced by the moon,
Regulating the most sacred method of harvesting grapes.

Of all the options one has of alcohol
Wine certainly distinguishes itself
And I guess I'm just saying that the
Brand marketing is really appealing
To me. I am the target consumer.

Let’s keep this thing going.

Make Something of It

Make Something of ItHow many poems could I write in a day? In a single sitting? And just how many
Would be about writing itself?
Not necessarily a bad thing, but surely a
Prevalent theme that would not go unnoticed,
If this were a volume or published collection.
Thankfully it is not, and I am in need of
Constant reminder of how I think and feel
As the driver of perception. And what truly
Distinguishes this form from general prose
Or reflection? I don't know; perhaps the freedom
To be partial or fragmented if desired,
Or be as linear and complete as possible.
The lines will tell enough of your story.
It is accessible, digestible, and most of all
Revealing, most of all when it is some time
In the future. But right now, the poem's story is
Flowing, unfolding, and will be complete.
By then you can project and dissect between the lines
And you'll surely make something of it.
Most of all, no matter the subject,
You will surely make something of it.

No matter how ordinary or common.
There is something captivating when I see
A squirrel scurrying about on a mission
No different than the one I'm on myself.

They are also quite alarming, sudden, skiddish.
I wonder if they ever tire from this disposition
But then remind myself, it is in their nature
Much like a hummingbird or any other creature
Designed to move quickly, swiftly, and with caution.

I wonder about the squirrels that take chances on humans;
The squirrels that do approach an outstretched hand of nuts
And have no intention of biting. I wonder if they make anything of this.
Do they commit the act of decency to some area of memory?
Do they even recognize it as decency to begin with?

Squirrels are mostly solitary animals, rarely traveling in scurries.
Their habits inform imagery of a fairly uneventful life, survival,
Peeking around corners and calculating next moves.
They seem, to me, all business.

I relate to squirrels more often than I'd like to admit.
I try my best to live in such a way
That I do not see my reflection in squirrels.
But everywhere I go, there they are
And what they illuminate is clear as day.

Follow along if you feel it!
